I am not sure about that. I think Brazil needs to step up its play big time. They have been challenged in games taht they should of won by a blow out. They need to step up their play quickly and tremendously. Germany is looking strong again so i am looking for them to challenge for a spot in the finals.

I say it's wide open right now. Argentina looks really good right now, and South Korea looks to be in another position to be a real title contender. Spain and Portugal can also sneak in too. Based on what I've seen so far, I am looking for a Spain v. Argentina finals.

Tuesday Match Predictions, and there are plenty of them as the third round of pool play matches begin.

GROUP A - Germany & Ecuador in.

Germany beats Ecuador by 1 goal; this will determine who plays who in the first KO round.
Poland beats Costa Rica by 1 goal to salvage something out of this World Cup experience

GROUP B - England in, T&T needs a win and England win to have a shot at sliding past Sweden to get in, Sweden needs a win or a draw to get in.

England beats Sweden by 1 goal
Trinidad & Tobago beats Paraguay by 2 goals

2ND ROUND
Group A winner v. Group B runner-up
Group B winner v. Group A runner-up

Dominating is 2-2? Sweden scored in the last minute to tie it up. That is what i call a great game!

Yep, it was. England will miss Michael Owen, though. So with Germany winning Group A, England winning Group B, and Paraguay KO'ing T&T to put Sweden in despite the draw, it'll be Germany v. Sweden, England v. Ecuador.

Wednesday Match Predictions

GROUP C - Argentina & The Netherlands in.

Argentina & The Netherlands play to a draw.
Ivory Coast beats Serbia & Montenegro by 2 goals.

GROUP D - Portugal in, Mexico needs a win, a draw, or a win by Iran over Angola to advance; Angola needs a win and a Portugal romp to have a chance to advance on GD's (Angola at -1, Mexico at +2).

Mexico & Portugal plays to a draw.
Iran beats Angola by 1 goal.

2ND ROUND
Group C winner v. Group D runner-up
Group D winner v. Group C runner-up

Can't wait for Argentina vs the Netherlands- last time they faced each other in the world cup it was epic. I also can't wait to see what Ghana will do next: if they continue playing like they did in the last match, they're world cup winning material.

Why, oh why, did Beenhaker not play Latapy more in all three games? I think T&T went into this thing looking to play defense too much, and in return they got owned in terms of possession. I'm still proud of my Soca Warriors, but they never showed the world how aggressive they can be on offense... except for the last 20 minutes or so against Paraguay. Oh well, we'll never know what Yorke + Latapy + Glen could have accomplished.

Now I'm counting on the US to make it in, but I don't think it will happen. Barring that, I'm not sure who I will be behind for the rest of this. I'd love to see Brazil finally start playing like they can instead of looking timid. I saw enough of that with T&T.

My dark horse pick is Sweden. Opening round jitters are over. They have talent on a team level, and while not fielding the best players, I think they can match up well against anyone.

Ghana 2 - USA 1 @ halftime. Im not really rooting for u.s or anything but I must say they're getting busted by the refereeing. Neither of the 2 ghana goals should have counted. 1st was a foul, 2nd was a penalty goal which should definitely not have been a penalty. I take back what I said earlier about the refereeing being fine, after seeing some more matches I must say its terrible and its screwing everything up.

And why are penalties shots so freakin close to the net? The ball should be moved farther back. Yes maybe there was a foul (or whatever the ref called a foul) in the box but still, the goalie should still have a chance to save it. So many times I've seen the goalie go the wrong way and they cant be blamed, with the kick so close to the net theres almost no time to react. 95% of the time when the goalie saves it (which doesnt happen often) its a total fluke, they just got lucky as go in the right direction. Or the ball hit the crossbar.

2ND ROUND
Argentina v. Mexico
Portugal v. The Netherlands
Italy v. Group F runner-up
Ghana v. Group F winner

TODAY'S LATE GAME PREDICTIONS
Brazil beats Japan by 2 goals - they should step up this time
Australia beats Croatia by 1 goal - a win or a draw and the Socceroos are in

I'm not surprised at Ghana beating the Americans. The US lost a few players due to red cards, and they weren't playing very well throughout the World Cup, something the Ghanans had with their win over the Czechs. Italy beating the Czechs? Not surprising either, which was why my predictions for Group E were Italy & Ghana going in.

Good try on the Brazil prediction there- they're finally looking like a force to be reckoned with, especially with everyones favourite obese footballer back on goalscoring form. Even with Adriano sitting this one out they racked up four goals, sending a warning out to potential usurpers.
While the Brazil match was fantastic 'exhibition' sort of game, Australia-Croatia was far more exciting. With Kewell playing his first good game in as long as I remember, and a few 'interesting' decisions by the ref, the socceroos made it to the last 16 for the first time.

Ronaldo, eh? Yeah, he's probably not the big-time striker he used to be, being older and all and playing for a top Greek club instead of being somewhere in Spain, Germany, Italy, or England. He's still a good striker, even if he can't run as fast as he used to.

If Ghana fans were like Americans, what would they be chanting to the Americans, who were somewhere in the top 10 in rankings by FIFA? "OVERRATED!"

Right now, there are three sides I'm most impressed with so far. Ghana, Argentina, and those Aussies-Aussies-Aussies!!

FRIDAY GAME PREDICTIONS TO ROUND OUT THE REMAINING 16

GROUP G EVENING GAMES - Togo out. Switzerland (+2) & South Korea (+1) at 4 pts, France (E) at 2 pts. France must win to have a chance to get in. Winner of Switzerland & South Korea wins the group. A draw between SUI/KOR plus Togo win or draw puts the Swiss and Koreans in. France win and SUI/KOR draw puts the Tiebreakers in play.

France beats Togo by 1 goal.
South Korea beats Switzerland by 1 goal. - I think the Koreans' play is slightly better, but should be a great match.

GROUP H AFTERNOON GAMES - Spain in. Ukraine at 3 pts - E GD, Saudi Arabia (-4) & Tunisia (-2) at 1 pt. Saudi Arabia & Tunisia must win to have a chance to get in. Ukraine must win or draw to get in. Spain wins the group outright with a win or a draw regardless of Ukraine's results.

Spain beats Saudi Arabia by 3 goals.
Ukraine beats Tunisia by 2 goals.

THE ROUND OF 16, MATCHES STARTING THIS WEEKEND

Germany v. Sweden - Saturday Afternoon
Argentina v. Mexico - Saturday Evening
England v. Ecuador - Sunday Afternoon
Portugal v. The Netherlands - Sunday Evening
Italy v. Australia - Monday Afternoon
Group G winner v. Group H runner-up - Monday Evening
Brazil v. Ghana - Tuesday Afternoon
Group H winner v. Group G runner-up - Tuesday Evening

I am appaled by the officiating. This ref was no better then the one from the Italy game. Do these refs just hate us or something? That PK never should of happened. There was no foul, Pingpong (

Didnt catch any of the other games, saw the end of the Brazil game, great job for them.

I think the refs does hate the Americans because of our crappy-arse president and his appalling foriegn policy.

SATURDAY FIRST KO ROUND PREDICTIONS

Germany beats Sweden by 1 goal - Sweden should give Germany everything they have, to no avail
Argentina beats Mexico by 2 goals - The Argentines are on fire, and should carry that momentum against the Mexicans. Should be a great game, though.

I would hate to think that's the reason. I've heard of folks treating us like crap in Europe and elsewhere just because we're American, but I would hate to think that it applies to a pure sport like football. The refs have just been pretty bad. Hopefully it gets better in the ko phase.

I've also heard rumor, granted it's from a caribbean newspaper, that the Swiss are under investigation for bribes to FIFA, or something along those lines. Can anyone validate or correct that?
